Situation: High pressure over New Zealand moves away today, as a complex low pressure system approaches from the Tasman Sea. The low and associated fronts become slow-moving on Friday, then become confined to the North Island over the weekend,while high pressure builds further south. The high spreads over the remainder of New Zealand on Monday.

Forecast: Strong wind advisory. Thursday: Northeast 30 knots gusting 40 knots, becoming northwest 15 knots overnight. Rough sea, easing overnight. Poor visibility in rain and possible thunderstorms. Friday: Northwest easing to 10 knots in the morning. Changing southwest 10 knots in the afternoon. Sea slight. Poor visibility in rain, clearing early morning, then fine spells increasing from afternoon.

Outlook: Outlook until midnight Monday: Saturday: Variable 5 knots. Northeast 10 knots developing in the evening. Cloudy periods, with the odd shower, turning to rain later. Sunday: Turning northwest 15 knots early, rising to 20 knots late morning. Rain easing to a few showers. Monday: Changing southwest 15 knots. A few showers, gradually clearing.

Swell: Swell forecast to midnight Monday: Northeast 1 metre rising to 2 metres for a time late today and early Friday. Northeast easing to half a metre Saturday, then rising to northwest 1 metre Sunday.
