Warning: GALE warning for BRETT

Situation: A brief ridge of high pressure builds over New Zealand today. An intense low,preceded by gale easterlies, approaches the upper North Island from the north today, affecting the North Island until Wednesday when it moves away to the east.Another brief ridge crosses the country on Thursday,ahead of a low approaching from the Tasman.

Forecast: Gale warning. Monday: Easterly 15 knots. Rising to easterly 30 knots gusting 40 knots this morning, and to 40 knots gusting 50 knots this afternoon. Turning northwest 35 knots gusting 45 knots late evening. Sea becoming very rough this afternoon. Poor visibility in rain by mid-morning,with possible thunderstorms.

Outlook: Outlook until midnight Thursday: Tuesday: Turning early morning northerly 35 knots, and northwest 30 knots by midday. Changing southwest 25 knots late. Rain, with heavy falls. Wednesday: Southwest gradually easing to 15 knots. Showers easing. Thursday: Southwest 15 knots, dying out late. Cloudy periods.

Swell: Swell forecast to midnight Thursday: Northeast half a metre. Rising to easterly 3.5 metres late today,then becoming northerly 3 metres during Tuesday, easing to 1 metre Wednesday and to half a metre or less Thursday.
