Warning: GALE warning for PLENTY

Situation: A brief ridge of high pressure builds over New Zealand today. An intense low, preceded by gale easterlies, approaches the upper North Island from the north today, affecting the North Island until Wednesday when it moves away to the east. Another brief ridge crosses the country on Thursday,ahead of a low approaching from the Tasman.

Forecast: Gale warning. Monday: Northeast 15 knots. Rising to easterly 20 knots gusting 30 knots this morning,to 30 knots gusting 40 knots this afternoon and 40 knots gusting 50 knots this evening. Sea becoming very rough this evening. Poor visibility in rain from late afternoon.

Outlook: Outlook until midnight Thursday: Tuesday: Easterly 40 knots, turning northeast 25 knots in the afternoon. Rain, with heavy falls. Wednesday: Southeast 20 knots turning southwest 20 knots in the morning, easing to 15 knots later. Rain clearing afternoon or evening. Thursday: Southwest 15 knots easing to 10 knots. Mainly fine.

Swell: Swell forecast to midnight Thursday: Northeast half a metre, rising to 1 metre late today and to 3 metres early Tuesday. Tending northerly 3 metres later Tuesday,then easing to 1 metre Wednesday, then easing to half a metre or less Thursday.
