Situation: High pressure over New Zealand moves away today, as a complex low pressure system approaches from the Tasman Sea. The low and associated fronts become slow-moving on Friday, then become confined to the North Island over the weekend, while high pressure builds further south. The high spreads over the remainder of New Zealand on Monday.

Forecast: Strong Wind Advisory. Thursday: Northeast 15 knots rising to 20 knots this evening, and 25 knots gusting 35 knots overnight. Sea becoming rough overnight. Cloudy and a few showers, then poor visibility in rain from evening. Friday: Northeast 25 knots gusting 35 knots, becoming northwest 15 knots in the afternoon. Changing southwest 10 knots in the evening. Rough sea, easing in the morning. Poor visibility in rain, possibly heavy with thunderstorms, easing in the evening.

Outlook: Outlook until midnight Monday: Saturday: Southwest 10 knots, easing to variable 5 knots later. Morning and evening cloud, otherwise fine. Sunday: Northeast 15 knots developing early, then rising to northwest 20 knots later. Rain developing early,easing to showers later. Monday: An early change to southeast 15 knots. The odd shower, clearing to fine.

Swell: Swell forecast to midnight Monday: Northeast half a metre or less, rising to 2 metres for a time Friday, then rising to northerly 1 metre for a time Sunday.
